I remember looking at some design annuals when I was 18 not thinking much of them. I thought that that stuff can only be interesting for designers, for the general public it’s simply not exciting enough. The older we get, the more resistant we are to change and the more conservative our outlook becomes. The only way to break from the past is to kill it off along with all those who prefer to live there. Nature has devised a grandly elegant way to do this by giving us clocks that coldly kill us so that are children are limited in what they can learn from us while making their own way forward, rather than forever living under our perceived notions of what is true and right. Without death, there would be no revolutions, no exploring beyond the flat edges of the known earth, and no attempts made to leave a lasting legacy behind. There would also be no hope of escaping from under the current dominations of the less qualified.

Если отбросить мои непомерные ожидания от Display of Quantitive Information, то книжка хороша. Она не исчерпывающая, но отделяет зерна от плевел. Рассказ о старых графиках открыл мне глаза на вещи, которые мы воспринимаем как данность; эволюция графиков напомнила эволюцию представлений о земле.

О конкретных приемах Тафти говорит мало, но он отобрал хорошие примеры, и они непроизвольно оседают в голове. Из очевидных вещей, которые я для себя открыл: шкала - это вспомогательная вещь, с ней можно обращаться свободно, текст и графика - единое целое, текст может распологаться поверх графики и сам быть графикой, легенды и обильное цветовое кодирование не позволяют воспринимать информацию целостно - во многих случаях таблица работает лучше. Ничто не должно оттеснять данные на второй план, всё должно способствовать удобству анализа и сравнения данных. Информация должна быть полной, корректной и неизбыточной. Если данные неинтересны, график будет неинтересен.

Книжка хорошо сделана, страницы дышат свободно, бумага гладкая и плотная, изображения и текст к ним расположены на одной странице, когда Тафти возвращается к какому-то графику он показывает маленькую его копию.

Сначала меня возмущала непонятность некоторых “хороших” примеров и явные недочеты в них, позже я понял что Тафти выбирал примеры лишь с целью проиллюстрировать конкретную мысль, для объяснения контекста и достоинств каждого графика потребовалось бы слишком много места, и основная идея была бы размазана. Спишу на этот счёт французские и китайские тексты, мелкий шрифт, отсуствие подписей. Ссылки на источники есть, но эти источники доступны разве что в инстранных библиотеках профессорам Йельского университета. Ничем не могу объяснить целую страницу, щедро выделенную под примеры мусорных шриховок. Полосочки, горошки, клеточки, Тафти как будто болезненно любуется ими.

Книжка будит аппетит, и уже хочется чего-то действительно съедобного.

Автор Пайтона, работающий в Гугле, рассказывает о своей разработке для составления рецензий на код, и самое смешное, это в точности то что я давно хочу сделать для ED. Совпадают даже акценты на проблемах и способы их решения. Надо будет заняться, для меня самое сложное сделать хороший визуальный дифф на вебе. Блять, я завидую. Он занимается этим на работе.

Я вот думал сегодня наедине о людской тупости, о том как с ними тяжело иметь дело, и провел небоольшой мысленный эксперимент. Я в будущем, все люди кубические гении, им непонятно как я не врубаюсь в элементарное доказательство теоремы Ферма, их немножко злит мысль как мне вообще удается жить в этом мире и не очень-то выделяться, иметь семью, приличный доход. А я смотрю на них с туповатой улыбкой и не понимаю чего они так парятся из-за этого.
